They look like toy boats, but they serve a serious purpose. An outsider at this facility near Grenoble, France, may see grown men riding arounda lake in miniature ships. But these are pilots of the world's largest ships, and they're practicing navigation with meticulously engineered 1:25 scale models of real cruisers, tankers, and containerships. Port Revel Shiphandling Training Centre, in operation since 1967, has had more than 6,000 maritime pilots and merchant ship officers from all over the world train on its 13-acre man-made lake. Wind-, wave-, and current-generating machines simulate real-world conditions, to help the pilots learn how to maneuver in shallow waters and deal with emergencies—in safe conditions. The school recently added its own built-to-scale course of the giant new locks that will open next year to allow the passage of large ships through the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal Pilots Association has made its own training lake but is sending senior pilots and simulator instructors to Port Revel to learn how to teach using manned models. Global markets have turned sharply more pessimistic about the length of the Iran conflict and now expect it to keep going for months, Amundi Chief Investment Officer Vincent Mortier said. Markets have pivoted in the last 24 hours from “a resolution within weeks to a resolution within months,” Mortier said Thursday on Bloomberg TV, referring to the war. A Qatari complex housing the world’s largest liquefied natural gas export plant suffered “extensive damage” following a strike by an Iranian missile. The Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the LNG plant that accounted for about a fifth of global supply before production was halted earlier this month, was hit after four other missiles were intercepted, authorities said late Wednesday. On today's show, US President Donald Trump pressed for a de-escalation of attacks on Middle East energy sites. He said Israel will refrain from further strikes on the South Pars gas field and threatened retaliation if there are more attacks by Iran on Qatar’s LNG facilities. Jerome Powell says higher energy prices will push up overall inflation in the near term, but it’s too soon to know the potential effects on the economy. The Fed kept rates on hold as expected. The ECB is projected to hold rates steady, with traders fully pricing two hikes later this year amid the threat of rising inflation. The BOE is also set to stand pat. Imagine having a tongue that's more than twice as long as your body. Now imagine being able to shoot your tongue out all the way to grab an object on the other side of the room. That's how these tiny chameleons hunt, as you can see on this high-speed video, which has been slowed down to 1/50 of the normal speed. By studying these small species—some of which can fit on your thumb—researchers have found that their tongues can stretch farther and faster than even those of larger chameleons. At zero to 60 mph in 1/100 of a second, their tongues accelerate the fastest and are the most powerful of any reptiles, birds, and mammals. Alan Turchik was psyched to be going on his first field expedition as an engineer with National Geographic. The 2012 expedition to the legendary and remote Pitcairn Islands in the Pacific Ocean was part of the Pristine Seas project. One of Turchik’s main roles was to help conservationist Mike Fay do reconnaissance by flying a remote-controlled quadcopter, or drone, to capture photos and videos of uninhabited atolls.
