Climbing Islands in the Sky in Search of New Species | Nat Geo Live
The tepuis in South America, often called "islands in the sky" for their sheer cliffs and flat tops towering 10,000 feet above the jungle floor, create isolated environments that make these unique land formations evolutionary islands. There are unique species living on the tops of these mountains that exist nowhere else in the world. Often compared to the Galápagos Islands for being an ancient island chain with a stunning array of biodiversity, the tepuis are actually much older. While the Galápagos are thought to be around five million years old, it is estimated that the tepuis have been rising up for the past 20 to 40 million years, making them the oldest "islands" in the world. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Nat Geo Live: http://bit.ly/MoreNatGeoLive About Nat Geo Live (National Geographic Live): Thought-provoking presentations by today's leading explorers, scientists, and photographers. Teaming up with Bruce Means, an ecologist studying the diversity of life on the tepuis, Synnott helps find a new frog species and encounters some challenging climbing conditions along the way. Tadpoles vs. Snake: Babies Hatch Super-Quickly to Escape | National Geographic
While inside their egg cases, red-eyed tree frog tadpoles are easy meals for predators such as snakes or wasps. But video recorded by researchers at Boston University shows these baby frogs have a biological escape plan to avoid being eaten. The tree frog tadpoles store and can quickly release enzymes that dissolve their egg cases if the frogs are under threat. This type of emergency hatch demonstrates that these baby amphibians have survival instincts at a young age. Hormuz Oil Shock Spreads West as Strait Remains Closed
Eric Nuttall, senior portfolio manager at Nine Point, said that oil disruption from war with Iran is projected to be worse than during the COVID pandemic as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Nuttall said that the oil companies are quickly working their way through the buffer supply of oil and expects that it will lead to physical shortages of oil barrels. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Love and Ceviche: Famous Matriarch Passes Along a Delicious Tradition | National Geographic
Take fresh fish, soak it in the juices of onion and lime, and what do you get? Ceviche (seviche), a traditional Latin American dish. But for Julia Ramos and her family, love is an added ingredient. Ramos, 85, has been making the dish for 60 years. She started selling ceviche in her 20s on the beach in Peru. Her dish became so famous that President Manuel A. Odría would invite her to prepare it for him in his palace. She still cooks to this day, but her family is helping to care for her and to carry on the tradition, running the restaurant Doña Julia. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Trump Threatens Key Iran Energy Sites While Praising Peace Talks
Dan Williams, Bloomberg News Middle East Reporter, discusses the latest from the Middle East as US troops arrive in the region. President Donald Trump threatened to destroy Iran’s energy infrastructure if no deal is reached to end the war there, while also hailing talks as productive.  “Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched,’” Trump posted Monday on his social media platform.  The message is Trump’s latest threat against Iran to allow shipping through the key strait, a month into the US and Israel’s bombing campaign. The effective closure of the waterway has squeezed global energy markets and raised the price of oil. Trump’s comments come a day after he told reporters that Tehran agreed to “most of” the 15-point proposal of ceasefire terms put forth by the US via intermediaries in Pakistan. Iran had responded with five conditions of its own, including maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz. But the president also suggested he wanted to seize control of Iran’s oil in an interview with the Financial Times, a risky military operation that would entail a ground invasion and occupation of Tehran’s main oil export hub, Kharg Island. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Young Orphaned Gorillas: See Their Adorable Bond With Park Rangers | National Geographic
At the Senkwekwe Center for mountain gorilla orphans in Congo, a handful of Virunga National Park rangers live around the clock with four juveniles whose parents were killed. The rangers see their families only every few weeks and are very close to their charges. Chief caretaker André Bauma along with his team have hand-raised the gorillas since they were first brought to the center. The first gorilla, Ndakasi, was found when she was just two months old, near the body of her murdered mother. Bauma cared for her like a human child—letting her sleep on his chest for warmth and bottle-feeding her to help build her strength. After that, three more orphaned gorillas joined "the family" at the center. Since no mountain gorilla orphan has ever been successfully returned to the wild, they will always depend on humans. To find out more about the heroic efforts to save the mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park, tune in to Explorer: Battle for Virunga, June 26 8/7c on National Geographic Channel.
