On a recent Friday night, the US made two drastic moves that could end up altering the future of artificial-intelligence-powered warfare. Just after 5 p.m. Eastern time on Feb. 27, Donald Trump’s administration declared that Anthropic PBC, the $380 billion startup whose Claude-branded AI products have recently become ubiquitous, was a supply chain risk. In addition to making consumer-facing chatbots and coding tools, Anthropic had major contracts to provide AI services to the military. That relationship had gone sour when the company refused to allow its tech to help enable mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, while the government said it should be able to use the tech for all lawful purposes. Using ultrasonic ranging and vibration patterns, SmartCane serves as an enhancement to the classic walking cane by detecting dangling or above-knee-height obstacles. Nike Inc. shares tumbled after the retailer gave a surprisingly gloomy outlook for the year ahead, complicating Chief Executive Officer Elliott Hill’s efforts to turn around the business. Revenue is expected to decline 2% to 4% in the current quarter and will be down in the low single-digits for the rest of the calendar year, management told investors on an earnings call Tuesday evening. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had been looking for 2% sales growth this quarter and bigger gains as the year progressed. “This is complex work, and parts of it are taking longer than I’d like,” Hill said on the call. “But the direction is clear, the urgency is real, and the foundation is getting stronger.” Nike, which has been trying to regain market dominance after a protracted sales slump, is facing headwinds around the globe. The company is seeing elevated inventories in Europe and the Middle East and traffic disruption from the war, which it warned could lead to more volatility in its business. Those challenges, as well as weakness in Greater China and other areas, overshadowed strong results in North America. A near-death experience with an elephant is recounted. Renowned field biologist Ian Redmond has been monitoring the elephants in Mount Elgon National Park in Kenya safely for 36 years. But on a recent trip he nearly lost his life when one elephant broke from the herd and charged him, knocking him to the ground and sending him to the hospital in a stretcher.
