Two weeks after the death of their matriarch, Victoria, wild elephants in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya continue to visit her remains and display unique behaviors seen only in their species. This video shows groups of elephant families using their trunks to touch and explore Victoria's carcass while standing peacefully in place. This rarely seen event is giving researchers insight into the elephants' social relationships. Imagine pole-vaulting across dangerous terrain, down steep slopes and ravines. "Salto del pastor"—translated from Spanish as "the shepherd's leap"—is just that. Now a folk sport and hobby, it was once the Guanches way of transport while shepherding on the volcanic terrain of the Canary Islands. Gregorio is a shepherd who still moves around this way, avoiding the use of cars and city life. Salto is now seen as a hobby or a leisure sport practiced by enthusiasts who continue the tradition. Images of devastated coral reefs, a common reminder of climate change, can give the impression of a static landscape. But time-lapse footage of coral bleaching as it happens shows a surprisingly active process. This video, taken by scientists in a laboratory at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, captures a coral ejecting its resident population of algae.
