Pangolins are considered the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world—scaly, cat-size, nocturnal anteaters found in Africa and Asia. Their meat and scales are in high demand for their supposed health benefits, and as a result the pangolin's population has plummeted. It's estimated that in the last 10 years, a million pangolins have been trafficked. Earlier this year, 4.4 tons of pangolin scales, labeled as plastic, were seized in Hong Kong, a haul estimated to represent between 1,100 and 6,600 pangolins and be worth $1.25 million (U.S.). Pangolins are now one of the most valuable animals to need protection, and bans are being discussed alongside those of iconic animals like elephants and rhinos. This short film produced by Coral and Oak Studios follows the regrettable voyage a pangolin takes from the moment it is caught to the moment it is consumed. It was filmed on location with the help of reformed poachers and wildlife enforcement officers. National Parks: Inside a Movement to Attract More Visitors of Color | National Geographic
How can the U.S. National Parks attract more minority visitors? America's national parks were created as free spaces for all to enjoy, but in both visitors and employees, they have struggled with diversity. A poll done by the National Parks Service in 2008-2009 found that 78% of visitors were white, even though they comprise only 63.7% of the U.S. population. Grassroots organizations like African American National Parks Event are now trying to help diversify the parks by encouraging minorities to get out and enjoy the spaces. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Both the mother and her young were removed in order to be released a safe distance from family patios. California's Oroville Dam holds a reservoir containing 1.1 trillion gallons of water, providing water—and power—to much of the state. Recent weather events caused it to fill up way above normal capacity. Concrete in the 50-year-old dam's main spillway, designed to handle overflow, crumbled, forcing managers to use the auxiliary or emergency spillway. Water pouring from the emergency spillway caused damage to the ground below, putting that spillway at risk of collapsing and leading to an evacuation of more than 180,000 nearby residents. The situation has since stabilized and people have been told they can return home, but workers are still rushing to make repairs and shore up the dam ahead of approaching storms. Read more about the crisis in Oroville and the state of disrepair affecting thousands of dams across the country. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/02/oroville-dam-crisis-infrastructure-safety/ Footage courtesy Cal OES, California DWR California Dam Crisis: Racing to Avoid Environmental Disaster | National Geographic https://youtu.be/Cg-isID0u4E National Geographic https://www.youtube.com/natgeo
