That's the reality for children in Atule'er village, located on a mountaintop in a remote part of southwestern China's Sichuan Province. It's a treacherous climb, which until recently had consisted of aging bamboo ladders. Now, the bamboo has been replaced with steel, making the climb safer and faster, though still difficult. Children typically stay in dorms during the week, making the ascent to return home to the village on weekends. This Swing Is Just Too Much For Fainting Goat | National Geographic
A porch swing proved to be too much for Ricky the goat, who comically collapsed in fright at his Ohio home after experiencing the sudden motion. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for critically acclaimed storytelling around science and exploration. When Lucy jumps onto the swing, causing it to rock towards Ricky, the latter stiffens and keels over in fright. His temporary paralysis lasts only a few moments before he jumps back up, unfazed. Their bizarre display of fear appears humorous and only harms them if they faint from a tall surface. However, the goats are still susceptible to stress if purposefully frightened. This strain of livestock are properly called Myotonic goats but they go by a number of common names, including: wooden leg goats, Tennessee fainting goats, stiff leg goats, and nervous goats. They get their name from a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, which causes their muscles to briefly stiffen after they are startled. The breed is one of only a few types of goats native to North America and, as their name might indicate, they are commonly found in Tennessee and neighboring states in the South. Mother macaques bear one baby every 20 months or so and do most of the parenting. Even the tiniest macaque youngsters in Tangkoko have a lot of freedom to play in and explore the forest, but they don’t stray far from their mothers. If hunters take a mother for meat, they may also capture her offspring for the pet trade. Faced with the illegal logging of tropical forest for agriculture—which is fragmenting their habitat—the monkeys are suffering serious decline. Meanwhile conservationists are fighting government plans to open wildlands to roads and industries. Advocates believe that teaching children to see the value of a forest full of monkeys will bring lasting benefits and help reverse the decline. NASA scientists tried to figure out the answer after the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope recorded gamma rays, the highest-energy form of light, originating from solar flares on the far side of the sun on three separate occasions. NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft captured images of each event from the far side, allowing scientists to connect these "beyond-the-limb" solar flares with observations from Fermi. Studying the sun may help scientists predict solar flares, which, when aimed at Earth, can cause both beautiful auroras and communications system disruptions. These Newly Discovered Frogs Can Fit on Your Fingertip | National Geographic
Seven new species of "night frogs" have been discovered in the Western Ghats in India, the only place in the world you'll find these creatures. Four of the new species are so tiny they can fit on your fingernail. Finding them was tricky, due to their size and habitat, living in thick vegetation. Nearly a third of amphibian species are threatened with extinction and scientists are hoping more can be done to protect their habitat, much of which is disturbed by human activities. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Cheetah Matchmaking: Helping Big Cats Find A Mate | Expedition Raw
You may not have had "cheetah matchmaker" featured at your high school career fair, but that's just what Vincent van der Merwe's business card may as well read. But trying to repopulate the highly vulnerable species can be as dangerous as it is exciting. Watch the video to see what happens when van der Merwe tries to translocate a very unhappy cheetah across South Africa. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Watch all clips of Expedition Raw here: http://bit.ly/WatchmoreExpeditionRaw ➡ Get More Expedition Raw on Youtube: http://bit.ly/NGExpeditionRaw About Expedition Raw: Surprises, challenges, and amazing behind-the-scenes moments captured by National Geographic explorers in the field. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible. The relocation work depicted in this video is a partnership between the not-for-profit Endangered Wildlife Trust and African Parks Network, with funding provided in part by the National Geographic Society. National Geographic caught up with Vincent, a National Geographic Big Cats Initiative grantee and conservation biologist, to learn more about his work as a big cat Cupid. Q. What’s the state of cheetah conservation in South Africa? A: South Africa is Africa's most developed country, so it's particularly difficult for cheetah to traverse the landscape. What we have done with our few remaining wildlife reserves is fenced them, so we have to swap individuals between these reserves to prevent inbreeding. And South Africa is the only country, worldwide, where we've actually seen an increase in wild cheetah numbers. One of the most successful conservation operations in Africa is the non-profit African Parks Network (APN). They manage 10 large reserves in 7 countries across Africa, and they've created safe space for a myriad of species over 6,000,000 hectares of land.  So it's really great to be working with APN and reintroducing species into their reserves. Q: How do you match mates? A: I manage a studbook for [330] cheetah in 53 different reserves across the country as part of the EWT’s Carnivore Conservation Programme. I identify which cheetah are related to each other and prevent putting them onto the same reserves. It's "human mediated gene flow," which is just conservationists driving cheetah to a new reserve. Q: What happens when you move them to the new reserve? A:  We put them in an enclosure called a "boma" for six weeks to three months, allowing them to realize what other large predators are present and it kills their homing instinct. As with any cat species, they have an instinct to go back to where they originally came from. The favorite part of my job is getting to open the gate and let that animal go be a cheetah, watching it run off into the bush and have access to wide, open spaces again. We carefully monitor them for a few weeks. If they're not hunting successfully, we'll drop an impala or warthog carcass to give them that little bit more energy to push them to hunt successfully.  Q: As a scientist you need to be objective, but is there any sort of personal connection? A: When you work with these animals you develop a connection. I did the post-release monitoring for a cheetah who at first made silly decisions hunting species well out of her size range, walked silly routes into the middle of the lion territory. But in the process she learns. Eventually, she gave birth to her first litter and I saw that motherly instinct come out. And the very best moment is when you get that phone call from the reserve manger saying, "Vincent, we've got four new cubs that were born to the cheetah that you brought in here six months ago." That is what really brings joy to my heart. The University of Michigan’s final April sentiment index dropped to 49.8 this month from 53.3 in March. While that was slightly improved from the preliminary reading, it remained the lowest in data back to 1978. Despite the vastness of Earth’s oceans, plastic pollutants are turning up everywhere, from the deep sea to the Arctic ice pack. Shockingly, researchers estimate that by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic—by weight—than fish. As these degrading plastics leach potentially toxic chemicals into the seas, they pose a serious threat to ocean animals, as well as to humans. To combat this frightening prognosis, Hawaii—among other places—is contemplating a ban on the sale and distribution of single-use polystyrene. In this short film from filmmaker Chris Hanson, 17 Hawaiian students study the impact of plastic pollution on their local beaches in order to help create a more sustainable future for the world’s oceans.
