The sweetest mango I've ever tasted is the Sugarloaf variety (also known as Zill E-4). I have two Sugarloaf mango trees, and while they’ve been slow to produce—often giving more male flowers than fruit—the flavor keeps me hanging on. It's that good. Alex from Tropical Acres Farms recommends patience. He says that after several years of mostly male flowers, their Sugarloaf trees began producing well. And based on taste alone, it’s easy to see why so many mango enthusiasts praise this variety. The Sugarloaf mango is a seedling of the popular Edward variety, developed by Gary Zill. Though the fruit isn’t the prettiest—greenish-yellow and oblong—the flavor is a showstopper. On the underripe side, it’s pineapple-like. But when fully ripe, it's a coconut-sweet explosion, with a flavor many say resembles the inside of a Mounds candy bar.
