Rainbow scarabs, a type of dung beetle native to North America, are notable for their metallic, emerald green exoskeletons, and they play an important role as recyclers of animal excrement in the Great Plains ecosystem. Dr. Frank Krell, curator of entomology at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, goes into the field to study the decline of the region's dung beetle populations and whether reintroducing bison herds to the area may mean a comeback for this gorgeous, poop-eating species. Apple has held exploratory discussions about using Intel and Samsung to produce the main processors for its devices in the US. According to people familiar with the deliberations, Apple had early-stage talks with Intel about enlisting the company's chipmaking services. Apple executives also made visits to a Samsung plant under development in Texas. The move would offer a secondary option beyond longtime partner TSMC. It's likely a young great horned owl and still has some of its nestling feathers. Great horned owls often roost on cliff ledges, so it's possible the young owl fell into the water from its nest. Seeing an owl swim is unusual, and they have no way to defend themselves while in the water. The cuttlefish would bend their arms and move them sharply like they were legs, and also develop dark spots on their skin. The researchers are not certain why the cuttlefish pretend to be hermit crabs but suggest it could be a form of defense useful in hunting small fish. Cuttlefish and other cephalopods are known to use camouflage and mimicry in the wild. The researchers hope to study the cuttlefish further to confirm whether the pharaoh cuttlefish are indeed imitating hermit crabs. In Sydney, Australia, a deadly battle between a spider wasp and a Huntsman spider concludes with a surprise. Spider wasps paralyze large spiders like Huntsmans with a painful sting. The wasp attempts to drag the immobilized spider back to its nest where the spider likely would have been devoured by wasp larvae.
