Iran War: Trump Holds Off on New Strikes | Daybreak Europe 05/19/2026
Bloomberg Daybreak Europe is your essential morning viewing to stay ahead. Live from London, we set the agenda for your day, catching you up with overnight markets news from the US and Asia. And we'll tell you what matters for investors in Europe, giving you insight before trading begins. On today's show, President Trump says he's called off fresh attacks on Iran that had been planned for Tuesday, after an appeal by leaders in the Middle East. The US President says Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and others have told him they're "getting very close to making a deal". Oil slipped on the news, but stocks in Asia and US futures fell, as optimism faded for a deal to end the war. European Union officials are due to meet to try to finalize the trade deal with the US. Failure to reach an agreement could mean missing President Trump's July 4 deadline, risking a fresh round of tariff escalation. Plus Alphabet's Google has agreed to create an artificial intelligence cloud business with Blackstone, that would compete with companies like CoreWeave. Wasps are highly social and cooperative creatures, and this behavior may evolve to deal with a risky world. Unpredictable environments may cause animals to come together and help each other out, even at the expense of their own wellbeing to help ensure the survival of their close relatives. They weigh very roughly the same as all of humanity. Army ants exhibit complex social behaviors that require group cooperation to achieve success. New footage shows how these ants build bridges with their bodies. The lead ant will slow down when it reaches a gap. The rest of the colony will continue to build the bridge with their bodies until the gap is closed. With brains that weigh less than one-millionth as much as a human brain, it is not surprising that these ants communicate using just 10 to 20 signals. Unlike human language, these messages are all instinctual. This example of cooperation goes to show why ants are such successful survivors. Each year, streaked shearwaters visit the coasts and islands of East Asia to breed, returning from their winter journeys to tropical and subtropical waters. Because of their wide and varied range, much of which is far from land, Katsufumi Sato, National Geographic explorer and University of Tokyo behavioral ecologist, has made these oceangoing birds a part of his research team. By outfitting the shearwaters with lightweight weather data recorders, Sato is able to capture information from points on the ocean, including temperature, wind speed, and currents, and compare it with results from other sources. He plans to add transmitters to the instruments, which could augment data coming in from ships, buoys, and satellites. THE YEAR OF THE BIRD In 1918 Congress passed the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to protect birds from wanton killing. To celebrate the centennial, National Geographic is partnering with the National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to declare 2018 the Year of the Bird. The more familiar auroras, also called Northern and Southern Lights are diffuse, and often mainly green or yellow, sometimes with a purple or pink fringe. Amateur sky watchers brought the east-west oriented streaks to the attention of physicists. "Steve" was a placeholder name, but stuck, later becoming official, standing for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. Normal auroras follow a cascade of events: charged solar particles hit Earth’s magnetic field, ultimately causing atoms high in the atmosphere to glow. A STEVE happens when plasma—charged, hot particles—flow along the magnetic field’s lines. STEVEs occur about 100 miles up, 40 miles higher than regular auroras, and are visible beyond the better-known lights’ viewing range. Green bands sometimes seem to shoot out from the purple trunk, much lower in the atmosphere than the main streak. Their cause is unknown. And exactly how do streams of ions become a glowing, purple STEVE? That’s also a mystery.
