This ritual is meant to appease Durga, the Hindu goddess of war. Participants split into two groups and stand roughly 50 feet across from each other … they then throw the burning branches. Their goal is to hit as many people as possible. To avoid significant burns, worshippers wear very little clothing. Holy water is quickly sprayed onto anyone who is burned. http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/photographer-of-the-year-2018/ Enter the Travel Photographer of the Year Contest. From his early childhood years to his final hours at age 91, Picasso was devoted to mastering his deeply personal art. He’s considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and his work is studied for its meaning and celebrated for its creativity. Nearly half a century after his death, Picasso continues to bewitch, confuse, entice, and provoke. The artist reinvented his style at a rapid pace, shattering our most primal understanding of the world with his fractured faces and splintered perspectives. He created tens of thousands of artworks. In this brief animated video you can follow the path of his life. Instead of the urban sprawl of that nearby megalopolis, there you'll find another kind of growth. The vines swallowing the houses in the village of Houtouwan lend them a feel of ruin, although they’ve only been abandoned for two decades. Despite China's fishing industry boom in the 1990s, individual fishers in the village faced a crisis of declining stocks. Almost everyone left Houtouwan for better prospects elsewhere. But the odd combination of empty houses and greenery on the seaside hills have made Houtouwan an offbeat destination for a small number of curious travelers.
