Will we Live in a World Without Snow | Full Documentary
Snow is eagerly anticipated each winter because it plays a vital role in maintaining the equilibrium of mountain ecosystems, upon which numerous high-altitude animal and plant species rely for their continued existence. However, the specter of global warming raises the question: is snow fated to vanish? In both the Alps and the eastern United States, the signs are unmistakable: in tandem with climbing temperatures, snowfall is dwindling, and the duration of snow cover is contracting. Teams of scientists are assessing the potential ramifications for creatures and flora that have evolved to coexist with snow. The absence of snow poses a threat to Alpine inhabitants: what lies ahead for animals like marmots or plants such as snowbells if the insulating veil of snow disappears? Meanwhile, in the forests of New Hampshire in North America, how will trees endure severe frost without this protective cloak? The decline of snow could unleash a cascade of far-reaching consequences. In France, winter sports resorts are grappling with an increasingly uncertain future. Featuring captivating visuals captured in North America and the French Alps, this documentary introduces us to some of the mountain denizens who eagerly await the annual arrival of snow – an event that can no longer be taken for granted. 00:00 Is the snow doomed to disappear? 01:24 Snowfall is becoming increasingly rare and winters are getting shorter, raising concerns about the threat to snow and the life that depends on it. 02:23 Lake effect snow is caused when cold air and warm water meet in the Great Lakes region, resulting in heavy snowfall. 26:18 Climate change may benefit some mountain plants, such as the dwarf juniper, which thrives in hot, dry conditions and is unaffected by frost. 38:53 Ski resorts in France are facing challenges due to unreliable snowfall and an unsustainable business model, leading to closures and unresolved public funding issues.
