Critics argue that these facilities are nothing short of 'torture camps,' pushing the boundaries of tough love to extremes. However, for desperate parents, military-style boot camps represent a final opportunity to steer their children away from the perilous path of delinquency and incarceration. Our team spent an extensive five months at the Discovery Challenge Academy, an institution that annually admits 125 troubled adolescents. The initial fortnight proved to be the most grueling. Every aspect of daily life was meticulously regimented: a mere 10 minutes for meals, a strict 2-minute timeframe for showers, and a mere 10 seconds allocated for putting on socks. Dormitories, each housing 50 beds, adhered to stringent rules, and even the basic act of using the bathroom required explicit permission. During the first three months, any contact with family members was strictly prohibited, along with a blanket ban on phones, TVs, and internet access. Who are these young individuals?
