The film Un Homme Qui Crie or 'A Screaming Man' by multi-award winning director Mahamat Saleh Haroun, had its UK premiere in London in October 2010. The film, about a father who loses his job as a swimming pool attendant in favour of his son, won the prestigious Jury Prize at the 2010 Cannes Festival. It is set against the backdrop of rebel attacks and civil conflict in Chad, which delves deep into the psychology of jealousy and the father-son relationship. Mahamat Saleh Haroun came into our studios and spoke to BBC Network Africa's Celeste Hicks.

Victim of a terrible famine in the early 1960s that killed nearly 20 million people, China is now facing a new scourge: obesity. 100 million Chinese people are overweight. Although it is a disease particularly prevalent among adolescents, affecting 20% of boys and 10% of girls, even babies are being born at more than six kilos. A phenomenon never before seen in the country’s history. Expansion and economic growth have changed the lifestyles of Chinese people, who are now consuming more and more Western-style food. Traditional Chinese food, which is generally quite healthy, has been replaced by “junk food” and the portions have doubled or even tripled. The overconsumption of fat and sugar coupled with sedentary lifestyles and the one-child policy have caused rates of obesity to skyrocket. The Chinese authorities are tackling this epidemic with former prison camps for overweight people run by soldiers. Television shows, smartphone applications, doctors and nutritionists are encouraging the entire nation to get into shape. In this documentary, we visit China to explain why obesity rates are rising, and how weight loss has become a national issue. But in 2015-16, an unprecedented ocean warming event killed half of the corals. The Pristine Seas team returned in 2021, hoping to see some signs of recovery. The current refugee crisis has caused a reaction across the world. As their home countries have become increasingly unlivable, hundreds of thousands from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Eritrea choose to undergo a difficult journey, leaving their families and old lives behind, in search of basic safety and freedom. In some cases, the mobile phone fulfilled the role of a constant companion and became a quintessential tool to facilitate one’s escape. This has lead many to document their experiences. Refugees are no longer mere faceless subjects of news reports - they are sharing their experiences over social media. Thousands of clips, recorded on mobile phones, are uploaded online and depict the happenings much more viscerally than a classic documentary ever could. As part of the the BBC's Africa Kicks trip to West Africa we took the Network Africa video sessions on location. Our first stop was Abidjan, the commercial and cultural capital of Ivory Coast. Singer Queen Nadeija performs with her band all over the city. We met her there when she came to perform backing vocals with renown reggae artist, Kajeem. She performed the Delta Group track, Saoupio, for us on a balcony downtown, accompanied by Adama Diabaté on guitar.
