She gained attention as the 2007 runner-up on the reality TV show West Africa Idols and has subsequently won multiple awards in Nigeria. Her debut single "In the Music" was a hit, and she has since released two albums, Wonderwoman and The Lasso of Truth. "If You Ask Me", the song she performs for Africa Beats, tackles the sensitive subjects of incest and child abuse. Omawumi wrote it after she witnessed a shocking exchange between a father and daughter. The father was telling his girl off for going out with boys, to which she retorted something along the lines of "and who was it who slept with me first?" The song is produced by Cobhams Asuquo, one of the most talented and influential figures in Nigerian contemporary music.

Broken Harmony: China’s Dissidents tells the story of Hua Ze, an ordinary Chinese citizen for whom a discovery of corruption led her into a hidden world of dissidents, citizen journalism, police harassment and kidnappings. Once a mild mannered TV director, Hua Ze discovered that an old friend reporting on alleged corruption after the Sichuan earthquake had disappeared, along with any mention of him online. Following a trail of leads over the great internet fire wall of China, she discovers not just the fate of her friend, but the truth behind Sichuan’s fatal building code violations, a jaw-dropping array of human rights abuses across China and comes to the realization that the entire internet in China is a state controlled fiction. Hua’s awakening takes her into a new world of dissidents, journalists and human rights lawyers. As she begins her own reporting, pressure from the government is swift, and her world is turned upside down. She is forced out of her job and placed under surveillance. One by one, her new friends are arrested or detained. Phones are tapped and secretive threats and warnings are made. But Hua cannot turn a blind eye to the corruption and she pays the price. When ordinary Chinese citizens go to extraordinary lengths to fight human rights abuses, the risks are enormous, even life-threatening. When Islamist militants captured Timbuktu and banned secular music, the members of Songhoy Blues felt they had no choice but to leave their homes in the north and head south to the Malian capital, Bamako. They were traumatised by having to leave behind loved ones, but they also had some luck. British musician Damon Albarn and his Africa Express collective went to Mali in a gesture of solidarity, and Songhoy Blues was one of the bands they recorded for their Maison des Jeunes album. As a result, the desert band's international career has taken off and they have played at several European festivals.

The man who first identified the Ebola virus back in the 70s, Professor Peter Piot, has told the BBC that it took 1000 Africans to die and two Americans to be repatriated before a public health emergency was declared. In an interview with the TV programme HARDtalk which will be broadcast on Friday, he also commented on the first diagnosis of a case outside Africa. "This is going to happen again. That’s why it’s so vital that in West Africa we bring this epidemic under control. Because otherwise it will be a continuous source of infection for any other country in the world," he said.
