Cockpit Country is an interior region in west-central Jamaica, which is home to the largest wet limestone forest reserve on the island. Its iconic landscape is the result of many conical hills separated by bowl-shaped depressions, known as the "cockpits". Its terrain is so difficult to traverse that it has remained one of the most untouched and biologically diverse wild nature spots in the Caribbean. It’s a biodiversity ‘hotspot’ for plants and bird species and it plays the most crucial role in Jamaica’s ecosystem. ...And then the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa went right over this forest on the 28th of October 2025. I went outside to film Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. In this video I share what Kingston looked like during the hurricane, what Jamaica experienced as Hurricane Melissa made landfall, and my personal experience as a journalist-youtuber documenting the storm. I also drove to Montego Bay the next morning to show the real situation on the ground. Many reports predicted Kingston would be one of the hardest-hit areas, but Hurricane Melissa shifted unexpectedly, sparing the capital from the strongest winds while devastating other parts of Jamaica. My name is Irina Bruce. I’m originally from Ukraine but I’ve lived in Jamaica for 11 years (since 2014). I’m a journalist-YouTuber sharing real, authentic stories from across the island on my channel "Jamaica With Irie". I studied Journalism and Social Sciences at City University in London, but left in my last year to do a science degree instead, which is a BSc in Aerospace Engineering from the National Aviation University in Kyiv, Ukraine. This is because one of my main hobbies has always been aviation.
